The Right Water for Your Coffee: How Minerals Impact Taste
Did you know that coffee is mostly water? In fact, coffee is 98% water! So naturally water actually affects the taste of your coffee. Bad water can cause your coffee to become bitter, flat, or overly acidic, and can even harm your beloved brewing equipment.
So… what do you do? Use mineral water!
How do minerals impact coffee?
Water varies from tap to tap and includes different levels of minerals. Common naturally occurring minerals in drinking water are calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium chloride, sulfate, and hydrogen carbonate. Water with high levels of calcium and magnesium can enhance the flavor of coffee. Water with low mineral content could cause a dull or flat-tasting brew. What you need from your water is a balance of those minerals.
HOW DO MINERALS IMPACT MY EQUIPMENT?
If you use hard water, you risk hurting your equipment. The reason that some water is considered “hard” is due to the presence of calcium carbonate. This mineral causes limescale to build up in your equipment.
